Day 16 (April 4): Metronomy - Salted Caramel Ice Cream
Look out your window. If you're in the UK, that is. And I can't be confident that all of the UK has the same weather today. And I don't know if you're reading this instantly after it was published, because it'll be night in an hour or so, which will make that point wrong. But anyway. Look out the hypothetical window. It's a sunny, pleasantly warm April day - the first genuinely warm day of the year. Premature Isolation Summer 2020 has arrived.
UK weather is, and I know how much I'm stating the obvious here, weird. Every time we get slightly close to summer, the weather gods steer too much into the skid, and the result is Premature Summer - 20 degree weather in April.
For a sun-averse vampire like me, Premature Summer is always a weird one, but I can certainly appreciate the good that it does for people. And summer is the season of pleasant, uplifting songs. Cast off that Lana del Rey and Lorde filled winter brooding playlist, and listen to something more colourful, like one of Lorde's more up-tempo songs.
Yeah, I know, this Premature Summer is a Premature Isolation Summer, in which time outside is circumscribed and my daily runs and walks are paranoid nightmares of checking the distance between each group. But we have to pretend that some things are normal, or we (I) will go insane.
So, in that spirit, my song of the day is one of my favourites from my summer 2019 rotation. 'Salted Caramel Ice Cream, from last year's Metronomy Forever, is a perfect wee summer bop. It has "ice cream" in the title, a bouncy... beat (that sounds wrong in some way I can't pin down), and absolutely no breaks for brooding or anguish. It is a wholeheartedly nice and cheerful song, and God knows that Premature Isolation Summer 2020 needs some of that energy.
