Day 38 (April 26): Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa & Imagine Dragons (with Logic and Ty Dolla $ign feat. X Ambassadors) - Sucker for Pain
Earlier this week, while discussing "Black" by Danger Mouse & Danielle Luppi (feat. Norah Jones), I mentioned that it couldn't quite compare to "Sucker for Pain" by Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and Imagine Dragons (with Logic and Ty Dolla $ign feat. X Ambassadors), one of my favourite examples of beautiful collaboration in music.
That got me thinking. Why not discuss "Sucker for Pain" by Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and Imagine Dragons (with Logic and Ty Dolla $ign feat. X Ambassadors) at further length? Today's song of the day, therefore, is "Sucker for Pain" by Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and Imagine Dragons (with Logic and Ty Dolla $ign feat. X Ambassadors) from the Suicide Squad soundtrack.
What is it that I love about "Sucker for Pain" by Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and Imagine Dragons (with Logic and Ty Dolla $ign feat. X Ambassadors), you ask? An interesting question. I think it's the sheer chaos of it. I mean, the posse cut is a thing, so the sheer volume of contributing artists isn't unique.
But I like the mix here. You've got four reasonably famous rappers, which, fine, that makes sense. But then there's the duet between the lead singers of pop-indie bands Imagine Dragons and X Ambassadors. Is there anything about this that really screams "DC movie"? Not really. But does that matter? Not at all.
You can practically see the boardroom where one marketing executive or another pointed out everyone who's cool these days, and why not try them all out, and throw that all at the Suicide Squad brand despite the absolute lack of relevance of the lyrics to the film?
This is future art. This is a preview of what art will become when artificial intelligence claims our broken husk of a planet and attempts in vain to reconstruct human rituals of culture without understanding what they truly are. Remember who came first here. It was Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa & Imagine Dragons (with Logic and Ty Dolla $ign feat. X Ambassadors).
