Day 43 (May 1): Small Faces - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake
Happy May! A new month may not seem like much of an occasion at the moment, but I'm firmly believing at the moment that future > past. I welcome the rapid passage of time, if not scientific progress on making fast travel a real life thing. Let's just get through this nonsense.
I was going to do a dumb and on-the-nose "song with May in it" pick for today, but at the very least second, my subconscious vommed up something slightly more interesting and still possible to link very, very loosely to it being a new month, so here we are.
Today's song of the day is "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake", the title instrumental track from Small Faces' 1968 album. I hear you - Louis, have you chosen something idiosyncratic and original today? Could you be acquiring individual taste? Don't worry. I first heard this song in the announcement trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, eight and a half years ago, and that is the only reason why.
In its defence, it was a pretty good trailer. Announcement trailers are always fun. They're just 100% potential and vague excitement with no need to commit to the gritty realities of how things actually work. Who cares if the graphics are better than they'll be in the final game, or that a thin story can easily be papered over? They are the better parts of life. I bet the 2020 announcement trailer would somehow have made this year look good.
So as we look on a new month, let's imagine the announcement trailer version of it. No need to bother ourselves with the anxiety and tragedy that will actually populate the month. Kick back and imagine a version of May 2020 that is actually, somehow, good.
