Day 88 (June 15): Kanye West - New Slaves

FREE STREAM : Kanye West's "Yeezus" ensemble features Kid Cudi ...There are two types of songs. The songs where the end is the least interesting part, and the ones where the end is the most interesting. Don't question the assertion, I'm trying on confidence. You know, the kinds of songs that putter out a minute before the end and fill the remaining time with quiet instrumentals (cowards), or something like "Paradise City", which knows that no time can be wasted in music, and dramatically speeds up in the last two minutes.

Today's song of the day is another double dip, proving my shallow music taste even further - Kanye West was last seen on day 18, and he's back today with "New Slaves" from his 2013 album Yeezus. "New Slaves" is a pretty great song for the most part. You've got some angry late-period self-mythologising, some biting critiques of capitalism and racism, a nice beat - it seems pretty satisfying anyway.

And then you hit the outro, and boom. Weird, discordant Auto-Tune and a complete change of sound and style. What's going on? Why is it like this now? The great thing is that I have no idea! It's fun when music just disappears up itself, and Kanye does it better than no other. I think that's a compliment.

Day 58 (May 16): Public Enemy - Harder Than You Think

It's a shame when a song gets boxed in as an advertising thing. It kind of squeezes the life out of them; artistic achievement reduced to corporate ones and zeroes, the actual meaning of the song dissolving into a catchy jingle. On the other hand... Look, there he goes, defending capitalism again. Well, hold on one second. Sometimes, songs being jinglefied for popular consumption on TV is good and interesting, actually. Sometimes it recommends music to an audience who would absolutely not think of otherwise consuming it. Sometimes it's just curiously weird. Such is today's song of the day, "Harder Than You Think" from Public Enemy's 2007 mouthful How Do You Sell a Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul? . Month 1: Murray Gold - The Shepherd's Boy

It's April 19, 2020, and it has been one month since I started this Frankenstein's monster of a song- diary-blog experiment. It's day 28 of the UK-wide lockdown, with no perceptible end in sight. During this month, this blog has accidentally become my main source of how I can tell human time.
