Day 89 (June 16): Parquet Courts - Freebird II

Wide Awake!: Amazon.co.uk: MusicIn yet another glaring omission from the first too-many days of this blog, I have realised that I haven't even given Parquet Courts the time of day. Specifically, I haven't given their album Wide Awake the time of day. This is a sign of moral cowardice on my part, and I am genuinely embarrassed about it. I mean, have you listened to Wide Awake? Is it not just really, really good? I expected to be more articulate there, but 'really good' felt right.

Today, I'm trying to correct some wrongs - my song of the day is "Freebird II" from Wide Awake. I could pick any tune off the album, but I don't know, I like the brazen confidence of naming your song a sequel to "Free Bird". It's like announcing your unaffiliated indie flick is the true successor to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 (the best film of all time).

Is it a true "Free Bird" sequel? Unclear. I don't know if it resolves whether the guy from "Free Bird" can change or not. But damn it, I'm never not going to love a song that aims for "Free Bird" and hits the target. That's the kind of self-assurance I crave to have a single ounce of. My only complaint is that they never sing "Freebird two" during the song, which would be amazing, but we'll live.

Day 58 (May 16): Public Enemy - Harder Than You Think

It's a shame when a song gets boxed in as an advertising thing. It kind of squeezes the life out of them; artistic achievement reduced to corporate ones and zeroes, the actual meaning of the song dissolving into a catchy jingle. On the other hand... Look, there he goes, defending capitalism again. Well, hold on one second. Sometimes, songs being jinglefied for popular consumption on TV is good and interesting, actually. Sometimes it recommends music to an audience who would absolutely not think of otherwise consuming it. Sometimes it's just curiously weird. Such is today's song of the day, "Harder Than You Think" from Public Enemy's 2007 mouthful How Do You Sell a Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul? . Month 1: Murray Gold - The Shepherd's Boy

It's April 19, 2020, and it has been one month since I started this Frankenstein's monster of a song- diary-blog experiment. It's day 28 of the UK-wide lockdown, with no perceptible end in sight. During this month, this blog has accidentally become my main source of how I can tell human time.
