Day 93 (June 27): The Clash - London Calling

The Clash: How London Calling still inspires 40 years on - BBC NewsIt's day two of this blog's little Project Restart thing! I'm happily putting myself on par with the  Premier League here. I assume people care as much, right? And if not, please leave me to my delusions: they're really nice delusions, I swear.

Today's song of the day is a bit of a fakeout. It's the Clash's classic (Clashic?) "London Calling", except I didn't really pick it because of the Clash. Sorry, the Clash. You're valid! You wrote a very good song that I appreciate a great deal. But you're not why you're here, sorry.

Why "London Calling" is actually here is a performance of it by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band from 2009 in Hyde Park. Aside from the painful, painful nostalgia of seeing thousands of concertgoers crammed into too small a space, there is just so, so much to enjoy here.

Bruce and Steven Van Zandt's weird cockney accents, and how much they are enjoying doing them, for instance. This isn't their song, but they are absolutely loving pretending that it is, and I absolutely love that. It's the best kind of cover version - kind of stupid and from a place of complete admiration. You love to see it. Sorry to the Clash.

Day 58 (May 16): Public Enemy - Harder Than You Think

It's a shame when a song gets boxed in as an advertising thing. It kind of squeezes the life out of them; artistic achievement reduced to corporate ones and zeroes, the actual meaning of the song dissolving into a catchy jingle. On the other hand... Look, there he goes, defending capitalism again. Well, hold on one second. Sometimes, songs being jinglefied for popular consumption on TV is good and interesting, actually. Sometimes it recommends music to an audience who would absolutely not think of otherwise consuming it. Sometimes it's just curiously weird. Such is today's song of the day, "Harder Than You Think" from Public Enemy's 2007 mouthful How Do You Sell a Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul? . It's April 19, 2020, and it has been one month since I started this Frankenstein's monster of a song- diary-blog experiment. It's day 28 of the UK-wide lockdown, with no perceptible end in sight. During this month, this blog has accidentally become my main source of how I can tell human time. You might have noticed that the days are increasingly congealing into a gigantic mulch that are impossible to tell apart, after all. Days of the week? Ha.
