Day 3 (January 3): The Go-Go's - Head Over Heels

The 80s. Many consider them to be good. There were leg-warmers. Neon. Excessively jingoistic action

movies. I don't personally see the appeal, but it definitely seems as if the idea of them had caught on. Hey, it's enough to fuel the success of Stranger Things alone. People really love that nostalgia.

Could have been the way they used relentless positivity to cover up the gaping flaws and inequalities of Western society, led as it was at the time by Ronald Reagan, a man who I personally consider to be decomposing in the ground right now and being eaten by worms. Who's to say? I was a 90s kid, by which I mean I lived through nine months of the 90s and my memory came online somewhere around 2004. Don't ask me.

Today's song of the day is from the 80s! It's the Go-Go's 1984 single "Head Over Heels". So upbeat and poppy and optimistic, right? Makes you think of malls and ice cream and Rambo. But just remember, folks. The 80s were bad as well as good. Don't you forget it.

Day 58 (May 16): Public Enemy - Harder Than You Think

It's a shame when a song gets boxed in as an advertising thing. It kind of squeezes the life out of them; artistic achievement reduced to corporate ones and zeroes, the actual meaning of the song dissolving into a catchy jingle. On the other hand... Look, there he goes, defending capitalism again. Well, hold on one second. Sometimes, songs being jinglefied for popular consumption on TV is good and interesting, actually. Sometimes it recommends music to an audience who would absolutely not think of otherwise consuming it. Sometimes it's just curiously weird. Month 1: Murray Gold - The Shepherd's Boy

It's April 19, 2020, and it has been one month since I started this Frankenstein's monster of a song- diary-blog experiment. It's day 28 of the UK-wide lockdown, with no perceptible end in sight. During this month, this blog has accidentally become my main source of how I can tell human time.
